So I have decided that I would become more adventurous in my eating habits. More specifically: I'll try anything once. Who knows? Maybe I'll find something that I really like. Now I've tried many weird things already. I've had reindeer tartar in Canada, grasshopper tacos, live stink bugs, and other assorted live bugs in Mexico and even your garden variety squirrel and rabbit here in the states. With this new motto in mind, here are some new things that I learned last night.

1. Anchovies are not meant to be eaten by man. They are disgusting "fillets" that smell like they have been soaked in petroleum and ass. They have little bones sticking out (Deni at work thinks they're hairs, but when was the last time you saw a fish with hair?), and are semi-transparent. Or maybe that was just the lovely sheen that it produced. The smell of the wierd fish musk and the texture of boiled bacon can be put right back in that little can and buried so as to never sulley the taste buds of another individual.

2. Cured octopus/squid. I would totally eat that again. It came from Japan and the presentation left much to be desired. Inside the little bag, were seven little bamboo skewers that were skewed with long pieces of tentacles. The suckers that were still on there almost frightened me off, but I dug in. Surprisingly, not at all like chicken. More like an odd seafood jerky. The end of the tentacles were a little chewy, but not too bad. I wouldn't actively seek them out at the grocery store, but if they were out a party, I would have a stick or two.

3. Finally, the dried fish (not little pieces of fish, but the whole minnow) and the dried shrimp heads. I'm going to have to go ahead and not recommend this dish. Like large nuggets of dried soy sauce with the occasional hint of bone and crap. I don't know if they were crunchy because of the skeleton, because of the way that they were dreid or because of the eyes that were still in them. That's right...dried eyes. Gross.

All in all, a mixed food day. And a slow work day. But I feel better having tried new things.

And happy birthday to derK.
